Patricia Villalobos Echeverría was born in Tennessee to Salvadoran parents and grew up in Managua, Nicaragua. She has a hybrid practice of prints, photos, videos and installations that explore how reproducible forms of representation can alter our notions of singularity and the various states of flux that we enter and exit within the context of globalization and an increasingly transnational era. She received an MFA from West Virginia University (1990) and a BFA from Louisiana State University (1988).
Recent individual exhibitions include Aguasmalas (Blackwaters) at MediaNoche (New York, NY), 2008; Aflujo•Afflux at Artist Image Resource (Pittsburgh, PA) and Laura Mesaros Gallery, (Morgantown, WV), 2006; Alamar (Asea) at PROYECTO’ACE (Buenos Aires, Argentina), 2006; and Hoverings at Artist Image Resource (Pittsburgh, PA), 2005. Notable group exhibitions include Imprint 2008: Kulisiewicz International Graphic Arts Triennial (Warsaw, Poland); Third International Biennale for the Artist’s Book 2008 (Alexandria, Egypt), 2008; EntreMuros / BetweenWalls (Miami, FL and Guanajuato, Mexico), 2008; IX International Cuenca Biennial (Cuenca, Ecuador), 2007; Point of View at Gallery MC (New York, NY), 2007; Falun Triennial at Dalarnas Museum (Falun, Sweden), 2007; and the International Print Triennial (Krakow, Poland & Oldenburg, Germany), 2006. Mi obra es una práctica híbrida de grabado, fotografía, video, múltiples e instalaciones. Primordialmente estoy interesada en como obras reproducibles de representación pueden alteran nuestras nociones de singularidad. Mis instalaciones también juegan con la tensión entre la tridimensionalidad física de la escultura/arquitectura y la naturaleza efímera del video y sonido. De esta manera, mi obra cuestiona el sentido de estabilidad del cuerpo, como cuando oscila flotando en la orilla, un borde permeable entre el océano y la tierra/territorio. Me intriga como el tiempo parece suspendido al entrar y salir de espacios en estado de fluctuación – algunos geográficos, otros virtuales - y como esa fluctuación se extiende al cuerpo que también oscila entre disociación e hiperencarnación dentro del contexto de la globalización.
My work is a hybrid practice of prints, photos, videos, multiples and installations. I am primarily interested in how reproducible forms of representation can alter our notions of singularity. My installations also play with the tension between the three-dimensional physicality of sculpture/architecture and the ephemeral nature of video and sound. In this way, my work questions the body’s sense of stability as when the body oscillates floating on the shoreline, a permeable border between ocean and land; I am intrigued by how time can seem to be suspended as we enter and exit spaces in a state of flux – some geographical, others virtual and by how this fluctuation extends to the body as it also teeters between dissolution and hyper-embodiment within the context of globalization.
